Maintaining your plumbing system is essential for keeping your home in great shape and avoiding costly repairs. By taking a few simple steps, you can protect your pipes, water heater, and drains, ensuring everything flows smoothly for the remainder of your lease. Here are three plumbing rules you may not know you’re breaking (but definitely should be following):

🚽 Don’t Flush It!

The biggest misconception about “flushable” products is that they can be flushed down the toilet. The truth is, only toilet paper should be flushed—nothing else! Items like flushable wipes, paper towels, facial tissues, and sanitary products are often labeled as “flushable,” but they can still cause serious blockages in your pipes and local sewage systems.

🔥 Check Your Water Heater for Leaks

The water heater is often one of the most overlooked appliances in a home, but it’s crucial to inspect it regularly for leaks. Check your water heater monthly, even if your hot water is working perfectly, to ensure everything is in good condition. Leaks can develop around the tank, pipes, or connections, and may go unnoticed for a long time, potentially leading to water damage or a more serious malfunction. If you notice any signs of leakage, contact our maintenance department and notify your property manager.

🍴 Your Disposer is for Food Waste ONLY

Grease and oil can solidify and build up in your pipes, causing blockages over time. Similarly, non-food items, like plastic or paper, can damage the disposer and lead to clogs. Even running hot water won’t protect you from a stubborn clog caused by improper disposal. To keep your drains clear and your disposer running smoothly, stick to food scraps, and always dispose of grease and oil in the trash.

By following these simple plumbing tips, you can keep your home’s systems running smoothly and avoid costly repairs. Remember, being proactive with plumbing maintenance is always the best approach. Your pipes will thank you! And don’t forget to report any concerns to your Property Manager and in case of any damage  contact our maintenance department.
